Ammar Al-kiyumi, Feras Al Hashar, Muayad Al Araimi and Bayan Al Ramadhani receives the Panel's Choice Award for their submission at Second Edition of Bilarab Award for Architectural Design. A national competition where participants were asked to design a Maritime History Museum in Sur.
The group proposed a museum that "floats" over the site, an existing and active public space on the coast of Sur. The lifted building also maintains the North-South connection between the city and the sea. A ramp extends the beach promenade over the Museum, connecting the public to an observation deck on the roof. The building features a tall spire that reflects the vertical landmarks of Sur's Light House, Watch towers, Ship masts and Bridge Towers of Sur's suspension bridge. The design also boasts a wooden shell structure as a second skin which is inspired from ship hulls, highlighting local craftsmanship; this skin functions as a shading element which passively cools the building.
In designing a concept for the Sur Maritime History Museum, the Architects took great care in engaging with the locals of the area and surveyed their desires for the location. Through these interactions, the studio discovered the peoples great care for a local artefact in the centre of the designated museum plot and designed a pitch that would allow for the current artefact to remain undisturbed and open to the public.
